專利文獻是一種法律文件。它同其他科技文獻相比，在語言上有其獨特之處，如準確嚴謹并列成分多，層次復雜，大量使用法律文體用語等。因此，合同與標書的翻譯原則，即準確、典雅、嚴謹、縝密，也適用于專利說明書的翻譯。
英語專利說明書有其一定格式，語言上有一定的“雷同性”。一般包括著錄項目、摘要、附圖及說明、專利說明、權利要求等部分�，F(xiàn)擇要敘述如下。
1專利摘要
閱讀專利說明書摘要有助于情報檢索，迅速了解發(fā)明的主要內容。摘要的字數(shù)通常**在200個詞左右。為了能簡明扼要地表達發(fā)明的要點和主要用途，往往使用長句，以及各種從句(從句套從句)、倒裝句，另有分詞獨立結構作狀語和現(xiàn)在分詞或過去分詞短語作定語等。因此，要譯好專利文摘，弄清原文的語法關系至關重要。我們以美國專利4，245，966號的摘要的第一句為例。
In a device such as a refrigerant compressor provided with a reciprocating piston having a stroke length which can be changed from one value to another in accordance with the direction of rotation of the crankshaft driving a connecting rod, there is provided an arrangement in which the top deadcenter position of the piston can be maintained irrespective of the changes in stroke length by an eccentric ring which has limited rotation on the crankshaft crankpin, and a second eccentric ring encompassing the first eccentric ring and which has limited rotation relative to the encompassing strap end of the connecting rod.
這一句很長，為一復合句。該復合句第一個逗號前為一狀語部分，其中有：①過去分詞短語provided with a reciprocating piston，作定語，修飾refrigerant compressor；②現(xiàn)在分詞短語haying a stroke length作定語，修飾reciprocating piston；③定語從句which can be changed…another，修飾a stroke length；④介詞短語in accordance with…the crankshaft，作狀語，修飾can bechanged；⑤現(xiàn)在分詞短語driving a connecting rod作定語，修飾the crankshaft。
第一個逗號后為主句部分，there is provided an arrangement是倒裝結構，主語為an arrangement。緊跟定語從句in which thetop…can be maintained，在謂語can be maintained后跟上介詞by短語作狀語，by后有兩個并列賓語：an eccentric ring，它又套上一個定語從句which have limited rotation…crankpin；另一并列成分為：a second eccentric ring，后跟作定語的現(xiàn)在分詞短語encompassing the first eccentric ring，又跟定語從句and which haslimited rotation，說明a second eccentric ring；另有形容詞短語relative to作定語，修飾limited rotation。

2附圖及其說明
專利說明書中的附圖有助于讀者理解發(fā)明內容，特別是難以用文字來確切清楚地表達發(fā)明內容時，常用附圖加以補充，以一些簡要的詞語說明。例如：
1) The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which figure1…本發(fā)明將參照附圖加以說明，其中圖1……
2)brief description of the drawings附圖簡介
3) Figure 1 represents… 圖1表示……

專利說明書主要是指對發(fā)明的描述，其內容包括：
1．發(fā)明的背景(Background of the Invention)。常包括：
①發(fā)明的領域(Field of the Invention)，
②現(xiàn)有技術的描述(Description of the Prior Art)，指發(fā)明人所了解的有關發(fā)明內容的背景技術，并指出現(xiàn)有技術中還存在的缺點和問題，以引出本發(fā)明的目的和優(yōu) 點。
2．對附圖的簡要說明(Brief Description of the Drawings)。
1) Figure 1 represents a block diagramof the present invention．圖1表示本發(fā)明的方框圖。
2)Figure 2 is a top view of the ionic solution bath shown in Figure 1．圖2是圖1中所示的離子溶液槽的頂視圖。
3．實施例的說明(Description of the Preferred Embodiment)。
實施例就是將本發(fā)明付諸實現(xiàn)的最佳實例。為了將發(fā)明更好地向公眾公開，在這部分往往用實施本發(fā)明的具體例子加以說明，內容較詳細。例如有些涉及工藝過程方面的發(fā)明往往要將實施本發(fā)明的條件，如溫度、濕度、壓力等各種參數(shù)加以說明。實施例有時結合附圖加以說明，因此要將附圖上所有的標記都譯出并加以說明。
在實施例說明中，常常使用下列詞語：
1)Referring now to the drawings 現(xiàn)在討論附圖
2)more specially to Figure 1 特別是圖1
3)the instant invention 本發(fā)明
4)as configured in fig 1 如圖1所構成的
5)unit under test 待測部件
6)undesired matches 不匹配

在許多英語國家，如在美國、英國、加拿大等國的專利說明書中，對發(fā)明描述部分的書寫格式和用詞基本相似，因此熟悉了上述說明書，就可以觸類旁通。
4權利要求書
權利要求書通常由若干權項(claims)組成。權項可分為獨立權項和從屬權項(Independent claims and dependent claims)等。權利要求書中常用下列詞語和短語：

1．常用單元句。單元句就是主句中只有主語或只有謂語的句子。例如：

上述單元句中，只有主語Apparatus，沒有謂語，其中characterized by是過去分詞短語作Apparatus的后置定語。
參考譯文：
檢測印刷電路板(2)或陶瓷襯底印刷電路缺陷的設備，其特征是：
2．常用分詞獨立結構。例如：
2)a bath composed of an ionic conducting solution, said board or substrate being submergeable within said solution；
其中，being submergeable為分詞獨立結構作狀語，其邏輯主語為said board or substrate。
參考譯文：
一個由離子導電溶液組成的槽，上述的板或襯底浸沒在上述的溶液中；
3．常有過去分詞短語或介詞短語等作后置定語。例如：

4．mean后常跟定語。例如：
